Stylish scooter with a top speed of 50 mph and a range of 70 miles
The EICMA motorbike trade fair in Milan began on 7 November. Platum, an Italian specialist in “urban micromobility” (i.e. small electric bikes such as scooters and the like), presented the E-Moped 500, an electric scooter in the style of a classic Vespa. Only the lights at the front and rear and the display look modern.
The retro design was apparently created by Pininfarina with the help of the Centro Stile Fiat. The 500 lettering on the side with the integrated “e”, which is reminiscent of the Fiat 500 electric, is a hint of this. The scooter belongs to the L3 class (equivalent to 125 cc) and offers a range of 70 miles. The removable battery also makes it easy to recharge at home. Platum does not provide any information on the engine power. According to the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations, light motorbikes in the L3e class (which are probably meant by L3) are divided into the subclasses A1, A2 and A3, whereby A1 has an engine power of less than 15 PS, A2 has between 15 and 48 PS and A3 has more than 48 PS. The Platum E-Moped 500 offers a top speed of 50 mph. This means that it is not an obstacle to traffic on many out-of-town routes.
The 13-inch front wheel should be “a good ally against potholes and cobblestones”, according to the brand. Platum also promises a spacious helmet compartment under the seat. The prices are not yet known.
According to its website, Platum currently offers e-bikes and e-scooters; the e-moped 500 is apparently their first electric scooter. The company appears to have co-operations with numerous car and motorbike brands, as numerous Platum sub-homepages show, including the Stellantis brands Jeep and Lancia, the VW Group brands Lamborghini and Ducati as well as the motorbike brand Aprilia, which belongs to the Piaggio Group.

The bottom line
Retro design is in. This is demonstrated not only by electric cars such as the Renault 5 Electric, the Fiat 500 Electric and the Microlino, but also by the new scooter from Italian company Platum. This should soon be available with branding from various car brands. The most likely scenario is a takeover from Fiat, as the 500 e lettering suggests.
