The Toyota Land Cruiser is one of the most impressive 4x4s and stands out for its off-road capabilities. Will its safety be up to the task?

The new generation Toyota Land Cruiser has taken a huge step forward in terms of design and technology. The adoption of a new-generation platform has undoubtedly given the legendary Japanese SUV a new lease of life.

The dimensions of this Toyota are impressive: 4.92 metres long, 1.92 metres wide and 1.86 metres high, with a wheelbase of 2.85 metres. As you might have guessed, the cabin has room for seven occupants and much more advanced equipment.

Mechanically, it is powered by a 2.8-litre diesel engine with 204 PS and 500 Nm of maximum torque. It is paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive system. Light hybridisation is coming soon, a system already offered in several markets.

With such an ambitious approach, the level of safety must be up to standard. But don’t wait for Euro NCAP as its Australian counterpart (ANCAP) has carried out a very thorough test.

In the asymmetric frontal impact, the cabin proves stable, scoring marginal for the driver’s torso and adequate for the legs. When confronted with the full-width test, chest protection in both rows is marginal and adequate for the neck.

All other critical areas of the body achieve the best rating, just as in the case of a side impact. The oblique test against a pole reflects adequate torso safety, and the presence of a central airbag prevents impact between the front occupants.

ANCAP scores 85% for adult protection, 89% for children, 84% for pedestrians and 82% for driving assistants. With these results, the new Toyota Land Cruiser 2025 (with the name Prado in some countries) earns an overall score of 5 out of 5 stars.

Finally, if you are interested in buying this model, you should keep in mind the prices for the UK market have yet to be announced. However, as a reference, the Toyota Land Cruiser 2.8D 250 in Spain starts at €85,450 (approx. £71,000) in base VX trim, and rises to €95,000 (£79,000) for the VX-L trim.
